SOTO CANO AIR BASE, Honduras –
Eighteen Joint Task Force-Bravo sailors gathered in the dining facility here Oct. 13, 2011, for a traditional cake-cutting event to honor 236 years of U.S. naval history.
JTF-Bravo sailors celebrated the event with the senior and junior sailors, Senior Chief Petty Officer Edwin Carr and Master at Arms Seaman Dustin Tyler, respectively, cutting the birthday cake.
"I loved being here for this; in this joint environment it's nice to see a Navy footprint on the base with our rich history and traditions," said Chief Petty Officer Deborah Kolar, from JTF-Bravo.
There are more than 18 Navy personnel assigned to JTF-Bravo.
The Continental Congress established a Continental Navy, later known as the U.S. Navy, Oct. 13, 1775. While meeting in Philadelphia, this Congress voted to fit out two sailing vessels, armed with ten carriage guns as well as swivel guns, and manned by crews of eighty. They sent them out on a cruise of three months to intercept transports carrying munitions and stores to the British army in America.
Additionally, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation Oct. 12, 2011 in commemoration of the Navy's birthday.
