SAN FERNANDO, El Salvador – A combined team of U.S. and Salvadoran personnel provided medical care to 364 Salvadorans Tuesday in the remote village of San Fernando, El Salvador, on the first day of a two-day Medical Readiness Training Exercise, or MEDRETE.

The MEDRETE began with an opening ceremony, which included representatives from the U.S. Embassy in El Salvador, the Salvadoran Ministry of Health, the Salvadoran military and Joint Task Force-Bravo.

On the first day of the MEDRETE doctors, nurses, dentists and pharmacists provided free medical care to members of the village. The patients were given preventive medicine briefings, evaluated by registered nurses, treated by doctors and dentists, and those with prescriptions visited the pharmacy to receive their medication.

The combined team included members of the Salvadoran Ministry of Health, the Salvadoran military and Joint Task Force-Bravo. Joint Task Force-Bravo is based out of Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras.

A MEDRETE like this makes a difference to the Salvadoran community by providing medical care many people from this small village might never get otherwise. It also provides an opportunity for U.S. and Salvadoran forces to work side-by-side exchanging medical knowledge and experiences.
