Soto Cano Air Base members hold multi-national sports day event

By Tech. Sgt. Matthew McGovern Joint Task Force Bravo Public Affairs

Joint Task Force Bravo members participated in an organization day July 22 here, to provide team building between U.S. and Honduran military and civilians.

The events of the day began with a two-mile run and included a triathlon, soccer, volleyball, water volleyball, basketball, dodge ball, a litter carry competition and funny dive.

"There seemed to be a sport for everyone," said Tech. Sgt. Karen Rogers, water volleyball player. "Soccer is huge for the Hondurans and not to anyone's surprise, they represented well."

The Hondurans narrowly beat the JTF-Bravo team to win the soccer championship game 1-0.

"This sports day joined us even more as two friendly countries," said Sgt. Francisco Pacheco, Honduran soccer team member. "Hopefully these sports days will continue and we can practice to play in all categories."

Over all, the lion's share of the winnings came from the members of the 612th Air Base Squadron. However, the Army Forces team won the triathlon and the funny dive and the 1st Battalion 228th Aviation Regiment were the winners for the litter carry event.

"This was the first time I experienced a sports day like this," said Senior Airmen Anthony Guajardo, 612th ABS soccer team member. "I felt the sense of pride and accomplishment of being on the winning 612th team and I'll be looking forward to the next one."

The ARFOR team, taking second overall, had competitors with similar feelings.

"It's great to see that ARFOR won the triathlon; it's the toughest event and requires the most cardio preparation," said Staff Sgt. Jordon McCoy, ARFOR triathlon team member.

The organization days are now scheduled to be a quarterly event. All events had similar degrees of competition and according to Capt. Ken Sterling, the event coordinator, there was maximum participation in all events and the day went extremely well.

"The purpose of the Org day was to take a step away from the day to day grind and compete as a team," Captain Sterling said. "The day fosters esprit de corps and team building, but also is meant to provide a day of recreation."
