SOTO CANO AIR BASE, Honduras –
Air Force Reservists from the 439th Airlift Wing, Westover Air Reserve Base, Mass., delivered 45,000 pounds of humanitarian aid here Nov. 17, 2011.
The C-5 Galaxy landed with aid through the Denton Program.
Clothing, footwear, educational materials and water purification systems were among the cargo. The aid will benefit more than 10,000 Hondurans through various organizations around the country.
The water treatment systems are for Hondurans who do not have access to safe drinking water. Twenty communities will receive a water treatment system designed to provide safe water for approximately 3,000 Honduras, many in small and remote areas.
Joint Task Force-Bravo supports humanitarian and civic assistance missions throughout Central America to enhance theater-wide security, stability and prosperity and reinforce cooperation.
The Denton Program was created by Alabama Senator and former Vietnam Prisoner of War Jeremiah Denton in an amendment to the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961. The amendment provides the authority for Department of Defense to use extra space on U.S. military cargo aircraft to transport humanitarian assistance materials donated by non-governmental organizations, international organizations, and private voluntary organizations for humanitarian relief.
