COL Steven Barry

Colonel Steven T. Barry is a native of Hamilton, New Jersey and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1996.  He has served in armor/cavalry assignments most of his career.  His first assignment was 1st Infantry Division in Rose Barracks, Vilseck, Germany.  There he served as an Assistant S4, Tank Platoon Leader, Mortar Platoon Leader, and Tank Company Executive Officer in the 2nd Battalion, 63rd Armored Regiment, 3rd Brigade.  As a Tank Company XO, he deployed to Macedonia and Kosovo. 

Following attendance at the Armor Officer’s Career Course and Cavalry Leader's Course at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 2000-01, he was assigned as the Battalion Maintenance Officer and, later, the Assistant S3 for 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, Georgia.  In 2002, he commanded C Company, deployed in support of Operation Desert Spring, and led the company during the attack into Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  After spending two months in Baghdad, the unit moved to Fallujah, and he assumed command of Headquarters and Headquarters Company until May 2004.   

After company command, COL Barry attended graduate school at Ohio State University from 2004-2006.  Following graduate school, he taught military history in the Department of History in the United States Military Academy at West Point from 2006-2008. 

In summer 2008, COL Barry attended ILE at the Command and General Staff College in Leavenworth, Kansas.  Upon graduation, he served as the Squadron Executive Officer for 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Ft. Stewart, GA and deployed to Mosul, Iraq from 2009-2010.  After redeploying, COL Barry became the 2nd Brigade Executive Officer.  Following his time with 2nd ABCT/3rd ID, he served as the Armor Colonel Human Resource Manager (HRM), Colonels Management, Senior Leader Division. 

COL Barry commanded 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Stryker Squadron, 1st SBCT/4th ID at Fort Carson, CO from December 2013 to December 2015, where he supervised the fielding of the first double-V hull Strykers in the Army.  Upon completion of this command, the Army assigned him to serve on the Joint Staff, J5, where he served as the Strategic Assessments Branch Chief and then the Plans Integration Branch Chief.  He then served as an Army War College Fellow at Georgetown University until the summer of 2019. 

COL Barry has a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) and Masters of Arts (MA) in History from Ohio State University.  His awards and decorations include: the Silver Star, Bronze Star Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, NATO Medal, Presidential Unit and Meritorious Unit Citations, the Combat Action Badge, the Expert Infantryman's Badge, Basic Parachutist Badge, Army Staff Identification Badge, the Joint Staff Identification Badge, and the Ranger Tab. 

COL Barry has three children: Elizabeth (13), Allison (11), and Ryan (9).
