Joint Task Force-Bravo is one of three task forces under United States Southern Command. Located at Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, JTF-Bravo operates a forward, all-weather day/night C-5-capable airbase. JTF-Bravo organizes multilateral exercises and supports, in cooperation with our partner nations, humanitarian and civic assistance, counterdrug, contingency and disaster relief operations in Central America.

Prior to 1995, JTF-Bravo's primary mission was to provide command and control, administrative, and logistical support for exercises, deployments, and humanitarian and civic assistance projects conducted in the Republic of Honduras.

Today, JTF-Bravo's primary mission is to support and conduct joint, combined and interagency operations in the Joint Operations Area, to enhance regional cooperative security initiatives and to support democratic development.

JTF-Bravo supports U.S. interests in Central America through:

- Building regional cooperative security.
Developing cooperative security arrangements and confidence building measures between neighbors that contribute to reduce regional tensions

- Developing military roles and missions for the 21st century.
Supporting Latin American armed forces as they develop appropriate force structures and doctrine, and demonstrate support for human rights and subordination to civilian authority

- Supporting the National Counterdrug Strategy.
Supporting counterdrug efforts and programs of U.S. law enforcement agencies and regional allies

- Exercising combined forces.
JTF-Bravo normally supports three to five large exercises a year that are directed by the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Vision
- To act as the Combatant Commander's agent to promote multinational cooperation in the Joint Operations Area

- Positive interaction through combined exercises, conferences and operations

- To be the supporting command in the region for the U.S. Embassy's Military Group commanders

- Assist humanitarian and civic assistance planning and execution

- Provide disaster relief, search and rescue, medevac support, and assistance for interagency counterdrug operations

- Interagency support and media coverage to demonstrate U.S. commitment to region

- To provide strategic flexibility for U.S. Southern Command regional engagement

U.S. Southern Command (USSOUTHCOM), located in Miami, Florida, is one of nine unified Combatant Commands (COCOMs) in the Department of Defense.

It is responsible for providing contingency planning, operations, and security cooperation for Central and South America, the Caribbean (except U.S. commonwealths, territories, and possessions), Cuba and the Bahamas, and their territorial waters; as well as for the force protection of U.S. military resources at these locations. USSOUTHCOM is also responsible for ensuring the defense of the Panama Canal and canal area.

Under the leadership of a 4-star Commander, USSOUTHCOM staff is organized into directorates, component commands and military groups that represent USSOUTHCOM in the region of Central America, South America and the Carribean.

USSOUTHCOM is a joint command comprised of more than 1,200 military and civilian personnel representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and several other federal agencies.

The Services provide USSOUTHCOM with component commands which, along with our Joint Special Operations component, two Joint Task Forces, one Joint Interagency Task Force, and Security Assistance Offices, perform USSOUTHCOM missions and security cooperation activities.

USSOUTHCOM exercises its COCOM authority through the commanders of its components, Joint Task Forces/Joint Interagency Task Force and Security Assistance Organizations.

Area of Focus
U.S. Southern Command's area of focus encompasses more than 30 countries and covers about 15.6 million square miles. The region represents about one-sixth of the landmass of the world assigned to regional unified commands.

The United States Southern Command area of interest includes:

- The land mass of Latin America south of Mexico
- The waters adjacent to Central and South America
- The Caribbean Sea, its 12 island nations and European territories
- The Gulf of Mexico
- A portion of the Atlantic Ocean
